Much like Aroma and 3M, another company striving to change perceptions about green cleaning in the FM industry is Khidmah. The integrated FM provider, which has been particularly focused on reducing water usage in their cleaning operations, has seen much success in that direction with the use of a new microfiber mop system from AVET, which has cleaning chemicals embedded in the mop head itself.
“The fibres of the mop are impregnated directly in the washing machine during the laundry process with environment-friendly and extremely fast-wetting cleansing tensides,” explains Jayne Ludlam, soft services manager, Khidmah.
“Moreover, mops and cloths do not lose any tenside, so that no tenside dust particles are produced. They then only need to be dampened with water to activate the substances impregnated in the textiles."

“This dramatically reduces water and chemical usage when mopping,” she adds. “This effectively avoids any overuse or underuse of chemical cleansers, as well as reducing the amount of water usage by up to 80%.” Ludlam also notes an added advantage to using the mop.
“Using such a mop means that the cleaners will not have to use a 20 gallon bucket of water anymore. This means that staff and clients will no longer be bumping into mop buckets and caution signs.”
Of course, once clients are able to actually see the benefits of such green initiatives, they are more inclined to having these solutions implemented in their respective organisations. Julian Khalil, division manager-cleaning, Farnek says that their consistent adherence to green standards in their cleaning operations have found much appreciation from clients.
“Less preparation time, less chemicals, less manpower and less water consumption lead to resource and money savings,” he says.

“Our sustainable practice always attracts positive feedback, and clearly we win and retain customers because of that, especially when they save money,” Khalil continues.
“We also have many cases where we have increased the life cycle of assets that would be highly damaged with ordinary chemicals. It certainly encourages more companies to examine their own corporate sustainability strategy, and how they can manage their energy and water usage.”
